Balance?

My friend and I were having a discussion about life and work and hobbies... he says it's all about finding balance... I say life comes in seasons and it may be full on for a while, but then you find reprieve for a time.

There are so many ways to frame your life and think about it.

Another friend, today, talking about God's plan for her life, said she knows God has "big things" for her... she's been preparing, and now the big things are going to start, but she's waiting for them.

But isn't the "prep" part of the journey? Yes, college is "preparation" for certain kinds of working life, but college itself is also an important journey in growing up and being independent.

I've been helping my friends and some family organize some things in their houses and lives lately. Things accumulate throughout the years and sometimes it's hard to let things go. My "golden rule" is that unless you've used it in the last 6 months, it's expendable, excluding some memorabilia... SOME...

Anthropologists and archaeologists study lives based on the objects and interactions in someone's life or in a community. I feel like so much in our lives now is short term... new clothes every season, new cars, new phones... what are the things that we do have that have lasted? Paper work and some photos... but with the age of electronics... will people save other's password protected computers to download the pics from? Will people keep other's kindles?

People talk about balance ... I want to think about value... how do we value things? What makes something special and memorable? I want those things... even if I don't get breaks... even if I have to work hard... even if it's not the latest and greatest...
