Just a thought: it was horrendously annoying to have to bring in current events articles and debate and everything, scouring through newspapers when I was a little girl.
To be honest, I couldn't have cared less.
But in a country where social studies and world history isn't taught, I see how little the children understand about the general way things have gone, or even the definitions of history, prehistory, current events, etc.
Reading The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, they have no clue about Nazis.
They have no idea about where hurricanes and tsunamis form.
They have no clue about many general knowledge things that got drawn into the interdisciplinary subject of Social Studies.
So while I abhorred it at the time, it definitely makes a difference.
