A few years ago, it was very unpopular for Christians to like Harry Potter. I often have visions of Christians very loudly forbidding their children from seeing the films and then hiding under their sheets at night reading the books with a flash light.
Now, Christians are drawing attention to the Christ-like Harry Potter rising from the dead for being an innocent, sacrificing himself to save his friends.
Some Christians are drawing attention to the "hokey" nature of this sacrifice, some find it full of truth and will now let their children read the series...
Though I didn't initially like the popularity of Harry Potter, once I read it for myself, I was hooked. As I'm re-reading the series, I'm mentally taking notes of the beautiful allegory I see unfolding...
Allegory is a dirty word in the world of literature. People think of those very intriguing mystery plays done in medieval England, or Pilgrim's Progress, which has a lovely Christian message, but isn't exactly The Chronicles of Narnia or The Lord of the Rings, or any other popular form of fiction.
And maybe allegory is the wrong word... but I can't help but see the parallels between some of the New Testament and Harry Potter.
I'm NOT trying to say Harry=Jesus... I'm thinking more of the spiritual realm.
Just think: people living in the world, ignorant, but maybe suspicious of the supernatural, when this entire secret world exists... full of beings of power... monsters, creatures, beautiful and powerful, where people are trained in magic, and use those powers for good or evil... to make the world better, or to destroy it.
Where wizards fight and plot for power, and wizards fight for love and goodness...
How many hidden things lie in our world, powers and principalities, forces... influencing our moods, our words, our confidence, our relationships... destroying or building us up?
