When I listen to the words, it makes me feel sad for people. People don't have lives like this... even Edward was only a little over a hundred years old.
The Twilight series wants to make soul mates real. Creatures going through life (and in this case after-life) together. I don't know if I believe in soul mates anymore... at one point I did, but it seems too depressing of a concept anymore. As Elinor says, "It is bewitching... the idea of one's happiness depending entirely on one person, it is not always possible." (Sense and Sensibility)
So when I read about Bella and Edward and how they feel pain away from each other and whatnot, I feel a bit sad for all the people in relationships who will feel like their relationships don't measure up because it doesn't match this slightly masochistic and completely selfish paradigm.
It's like we're trying to have an eternal relationship in temporal bodies... it's like we're trying to make ourselves more than souls... gods...
For those thinking of using this song in their weddings, please don't have lyrics including death in your wedding celebration... it's just depressing...
But something in us hears this song and can't help but want it to be true. Even me... the slightly cynical yet completely cheesy and romantic son-of-a...
The only way these lyrics can fit into a beautiful loving relationship appropriately is that of Jesus singing to us, His beloved... it's like this song comes straight out of Song of Songs, when the young man went up on the mountain... or straight from Hosea, when he brought his beloved out to the desert place...
A Thousand Years:
Heart beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer
[Chorus:]
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath
Every hour has come to this
One step closer
[Chorus:]
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling don't be afraid I have loved you
For a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
So I can't see this being meaningful if any human said it to any human... maybe if Orpheus said it to Persephone or something like that... I can imagine Jesus saying this to people. I can imagine Jesus thinking of us while waiting in jail, ready to be nailed to the cross... or in the grave, not dead, but waiting, luring us with his respectful and adoring eyes, seeing the beauty in us when we can't see it. I could go on, but it's just going to get ridiculous.
I'll let you decide for yourselves... but Love Songs & God might become a new blog series for me... I have a few more I've been thinking about. :)
