Finding Compassion

Plato once said "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle."

This sign is posted on my wall in my classroom and I often point to it when students are squabbling or inclined to be unforgiving... but in this case, I need to heed it myself.

Today was LONG. It was a Monday and there were some unexpected twists and turns.

You see, I found out about something last minute, and then I had to scramble, and then I was frustrated and had to organize quickly... and I got angry.

Then... I asked for an explanation and got a curt reply insinuating I hadn't done my job properly and had been remiss.

I pursued the conversation, blood boiling, but ever polite and professional, if not a little irritated.

Till I got to the root of the matter... my colleague, who had impinged in me unduly, had herself been impinged upon....

And so the story goes... I had been uncharitable, frustrated and downright angry at the wrong person.

Sigh. We cannot always tell where the pressure is going to come from, but we (I) should remember that if someone is putting pressure on me, it is probably because some sort of pressure is being put on them.

We all need to have a little compassion for one another...

  1. Pressure: it can turn carbon to diamonds...or dust. All depends on how it's done.
