Why is it that some kids, no matter what you do, having homing equipment to hone in on weaknesses, and good intentions, and are super geniuses when it comes to finding ways to twist it around and mock you with it? You know who I mean... the popular kids, the mean kids, tanned, usually rich and sporty, and vicious. They smile and say 'please' and 'thank you' to their elders, so no one would believe that they smash your face into the locker or put syrup in your hair, hack your fb account, copy your homework and then rip yours up,... you name it, they did it.
Whether you had red hair, freckles or glasses, whether you had a lisp or old shoes, they had eagle eyes for your most 'vulnerable' point and they never let you forget it.
Well those mean kids grew up and get jobs as newscasters on Fox News--and they love revealing "shocking" news, everything they string together, I mean "uncover" was someone's ploy to defraud you--everyone's motives are nefarious, and if you don't know what that means, don't worry, they'll google it for you. They're job is to cast people in the worst possible light, to raise doubts in faithful hearts, to engender fear where there is no harm, making us the dangerous ones. Because when people are desperate, we will do desperate things to those we're afraid of, to those who threaten us, etc. etc.
The problem is not with being patriotic or brave enough to defend our country or our family, the problem is not being reactionary, the problem is having people who are supposed to inform us of news, to emotionalize ridiculous bits of information that cause people to be afraid and react.
Still, I am less than impressed that so many people actually believe the bs that's spinned on Fox News. But really, it's because we want it to be true. Why else would so many intelligent and good people believe something? Because something in us delights when those around us fall, literally, figuratively, or in this case, imaginatively... We're the crowd around the bullies pointing and laughing when they trip the geek in the hallway. "Drop in Crime Rates," or "Thousands give to disaster relief" or "Happy couples steady in marriage"--who's reading those headlines? If they aren't selling something, they're pass out free hits of fear, destruction, pride and despair.
That is not news... if you want to bring out our emotions, start a drama school and a theater, cause it's getting a bit ridiculous now...
