Groundhog Day... is not alone...

So in class today, I educated my international students on Groundhog day. Usually my English students stare at me in disbelief... "So... you're telling me that Americans think fat rodents can tell the seasons?"... umm yes, and it's awesome.

Instead, my Polish and Lithuanian students said, "Ah yes, we do the same in... Poland and Lithuania...only it's a... a... (they were looking for the word beaver)... (awesome motioning of fangs, to mean the teeth).

Really?

In Lithuania, they supposedly use a hedgehog... "the one with spikes Miss... (showed them picture of a porcupine and I got Nos, so then pic of a hedgehog went up to cheers from the Lithuanian students.)

I'm somehow really glad that the US isn't the only country that tries to guess the weather by using rodents... and here we thought we were all original or something. Then again, maybe they were messing with me... but until then, I'm going to believe news crews in Poland crowd to wooded rivers to see if the family of local beavers will come out of their dams, see their shadows and scurry back inside...
